Brno: General Information

Czech’s second largest city, Brno, is the acknowledged metropolis of the country's economically and culturally most important region- wine producing South Moravia. Most famous for its lively and commercially successful expositions and fairs, the Brno Trade Fair grounds are considered to be among Europe's most beautiful trade fair grounds.

The vast Spilberk castle, towering above the city on a hill in the west, was founded in the first part of 13th Century to protect the city. Reconstructed in a Gothic style at the end of the 13th Century, it evolved into a heavy fortress in the 17th century and was later a much-feared prison, also used by the German Gestapo during WWII. The twin towered St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral on the top of the Petrov Hill, its Gothic exterior belying its showy Baroque interior, competes with Spilberk in the silhouette of Brno . Also of interest is the Capuchin Church with a crypt full of naturally mummified corpses and the two town halls of Brno.

Brno is closely linked with the lives and works of the world famous composer Leos Janacek, the inventor of the water-turbine Prof. Viktor Kaplan, the mathematician Kurt Godel, the physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach and the father of genetics Johann Gregor Mendel and there are several museums and theatres proudly displaying their genius.

The countryside of Brno boasts the famous Masaryk Race Track, the stage of international bike races, located near the Brno Dam and the beautiful Veveri Castle .
